Psoralen
Psoralen is a medication used primarily in the treatment of psoriasis and vitiligo. It works by making the skin more sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light, which helps in reducing skin symptoms and promoting pigment formation.-Psoriasis: To reduce the scaling and inflammation associated with this condition. -Vitiligo: To promote repigmentation of the skin.
-Psoriasis: Typically, 0.6 to 1.0 mg/kg body weight, administered orally. Treatment is usually combined with PUVA (psoralen plus UVA light) therapy. -Vitiligo: Dosage may vary, generally similar to psoriasis treatment, adjusted based on individual response and side effects.
-Pregnancy: Not recommended due to potential harm to the fetus. Liver or Kidney Disease: Use with caution and under medical supervision. -Severe Skin Disorders: Not recommended for patients with severe skin conditions other than psoriasis or vitiligo.
-Sun Exposure: Avoid excessive sun exposure as psoralen increases sensitivity to UV light. -Regular Monitoring: Periodic eye exams and liver function tests are advised during treatment. -Pregnancy: Consult a healthcare provider before use.
-Common: Nausea, dizziness, and headache. -Serious: Photosensitivity reactions, skin burns, and potential eye damage. -Long-term Use: Increased risk of skin cancer with prolonged use.
-Photosensitizers: Concurrent use with other photosensitizing drugs may increase risk of adverse effects. -Anticoagulants: Psoralen may enhance the effect of blood thinners, increasing bleeding risk.
