Quetiapine

Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. It works by altering the actions of certain chemicals in the brain.

Indications

-Schizophrenia -Bipolar Disorder (manic and depressive episodes) -Major Depressive Disorder (as an adjunct treatment)


Dosage

-Schizophrenia: Starting dose of 25 mg twice daily, increasing to 300-400 mg daily in divided doses. -Bipolar Disorder: Starting dose of 50 mg twice daily, increasing to 400-800 mg daily in divided doses. -Major Depressive Disorder: Starting dose of 50 mg once daily, increasing to 150-300 mg once daily.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to Quetiapine or any of its ingredients. -Concurrent use with certain medications that prolong the QT interval.


Special Precautions

-Monitor for worsening of depression or suicidal thoughts. -Use caution in patients with a history of seizures, cardiovascular diseases, or diabetes. -Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels and lipid profiles. -Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent withdrawal symptoms.


Side Effects

-Drowsiness -Dizziness -Dry mouth -Constipation Weight gain -Elevated cholesterol and triglycerides -Orthostatic hypotension -Increased risk of diabetes -Extrapyramidal symptoms


Drug Interactions

-Increased effects with other central nervous system depressants. -Possible interaction with antihypertensive medications. -CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole) may increase Quetiapine levels. -CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., phenytoin) may decrease Quetiapine levels.
