R DNA HUMAN MONOCOMPENT REGULAR INSULIN

R DNA Human Monocomponent Regular Insulin is a fast-acting insulin that is used to control blood glucose levels in people with diabetes mellitus. It is produced using recombinant DNA technology and is identical to the insulin produced by the human pancreas.

Indications

-Management of hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes mellitus -Used in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes -Can be administered in cases of diabetic ketoacidosis -Suitable for use in insulin pumps for continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII)


Dosage

-Adults and Adolescents: Typically, 0.5 to 1 unit/kg/day divided into multiple doses. -Children: Dosage individualized based on age, weight, and metabolic needs. -Administered subcutaneously 30 minutes before meals. -Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on blood glucose monitoring results, physical activity, and concurrent illnesses.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to regular human insulin or any of the excipients -Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) -Not to be used during episodes of hypoglycemia


Special Precautions

-Frequent monitoring of blood glucose levels is necessary. -Adjustments in dosage may be required during illness, stress, or changes in diet or physical activity. -Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment. -Rotation of injection sites to reduce the risk of lipodystrophy.


Side Effects

-Hypoglycemia -Injection site reactions (e.g., redness, swelling, itching) -Lipodystrophy (thickening or pitting of the skin at the injection site) -Weight gain -Rare allergic reactions (e.g., rash, shortness of breath)


Drug Interactions

-Enhancement of hypoglycemic effect: Oral hypoglycemic agents, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, salicylates, alcohol. -Reduction of hypoglycemic effect: Corticosteroids, diuretics, sympathomimetic agents, thyroid hormones, oral contraceptives. -Caution with beta-blockers as they may mask hypoglycemia symptoms.
