Ritonavir with lopinavir
Ritonavir with Lopinavir is a combination medication used in the management of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection. Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor that also boosts the levels of lopinavir by inhibiting its metabolism, thus enhancing its effectiveness in controlling HIV replication.-It is indicated in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of HIV-infection/HIV related illnesses. -HIV Infection: Used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients.
-Dosage is individualized based on factors such as the patient's weight, age, and overall health. It is usually administered orally, with or without food. -It is approved for twice daily dosing but it is also approved for once daily dosing in treatment-naive adults. Adult : 400/100mg twice a day 12 hourly. 800/200mg once in a day 24 hourly (only recommended for treatment-naive adults.) Paediatrics : Dose is based on their body weight. Agehe next dose, skip the missed dose and continue regular dosing schedule. Do not give a double dose to make-up for a missed one.
Hypersensitivity: Patients with known hypersensitivity to ritonavir, lopinavir, or any of the components of the combination.
-Liver Impairment: Caution is advised in patients with pre-existing liver conditions. -Cardiovascular Risk Factors: Monitor patients for cardiovascular risk factors and manage accordingly.
Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and changes in lipid levels. Serious side effects may include hepatotoxicity and changes in cardiac conduction (prolongation of the QT interval).
-CYP3A4 Substrates: Ritonavir can significantly increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4, potentially leading to increased side effects. -Statins: Increased risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis when combined with certain statins.
