Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) commonly used in skincare products for its exfoliating and acne-treating properties. It helps in the removal of dead skin cells, reduces inflammation, and clears blocked pores.

Indications

-Treatment of acne vulgaris -Management of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis -Treatment of plantar warts, common warts, and verrucas

Dosage

-Acne: Apply topically as a cleanser or spot treatment; typically 2% concentration. -Warts: Apply as a liquid, gel, or plaster; usually 17% to 40% concentration. -Dandruff: Use shampoos containing 1% to 2% salicylic acid.

Contra-Indications

-Known hypersensitivity to salicylic acid or other salicylates -Avoid use on broken or irritated skin -Not recommended for use in children under 2 years of age

Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with eczema or psoriasis -Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and mouth -Do not use on large areas of the body or for prolonged periods

Side Effects

-Skin irritation (redness, peeling, dryness) -Allergic reactions (itching, swelling, rash) -Possible exacerbation of existing skin conditions

Drug Interactions

-May interact with other topical acne treatments, increasing irritation -Potential interaction with anticoagulants if used in large amounts
