Silver sulfadiazine

Used topically as 1% cream, it is active against a large nuber of bacteria & fungi, even those resistant to other sulfonamides, e.g. pseudomonas. It slowly releases silver ions which appear to be largely responsible for the antimicrobial action. It is considered to be one of the most effective drugs for preventing infection of burnt surfaces & chronic ulcers.

Indications

2nd & 3rd degree infected burns.


Dosage

Apply 3-4 times a day or as required.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to sulphona-mides. Pregnancy.


Special Precautions

Impaired liver or kidney functions. Paediatrics: Use with caution. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Use ith caution. Elderly: Safe.


Side Effects

Burning sensation and itching.


Drug Interactions

Inhibits metabolism of diphenylhydantoin and Tolbutamide. With cimetidine increased leukopenia. Enhanced topical protection with cerenium nitrate, chlorohexadine.
