Silver sulfadiazine
Used topically as 1% cream, it is active against a large nuber of bacteria & fungi, even those resistant to other sulfonamides, e.g. pseudomonas. It slowly releases silver ions which appear to be largely responsible for the antimicrobial action. It is considered to be one of the most effective drugs for preventing infection of burnt surfaces & chronic ulcers.2nd & 3rd degree infected burns.
Apply 3-4 times a day or as required.
Hypersensitivity to sulphona-mides. Pregnancy.
Impaired liver or kidney functions. Paediatrics: Use with caution. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Use ith caution. Elderly: Safe.
Burning sensation and itching.
Inhibits metabolism of diphenylhydantoin and Tolbutamide. With cimetidine increased leukopenia. Enhanced topical protection with cerenium nitrate, chlorohexadine.
