SODIUM ALENDRONATE

Sodium Alendronate is a bisphosphonate used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men, as well as Paget’s disease of bone. It works by inhibiting bone resorption, thus helping to maintain or increase bone density.

Indications

-Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women -Osteoporosis in men -Paget’s disease of bone -Osteoporosis associated with long-term use of corticosteroids


Dosage

-Osteoporosis: 70 mg once weekly or 10 mg daily -Paget's Disease: 40 mg daily for six months -Dosage adjustments: Should be adjusted in patients with renal impairment


Contra-Indications

-Hypocalcemia -Esophageal abnormalities that delay esophageal emptying -Known hypersensitivity to sodium alendronate or any component of the formulation -Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes


Special Precautions

-Ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake -Perform a dental examination before starting treatment due to risk of jaw osteonecrosis -Monitor renal function regularly -Use with caution in patients with renal impairment


Side Effects

-Gastrointestinal issues (e.g., abdominal pain, nausea, dyspepsia) -Musculoskeletal pain -Rarely, osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical femoral fractures


Drug Interactions

-May reduce absorption when taken with calcium, antacids, or other minerals -Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may increase gastrointestinal irritation
