SODIUM SULPHACETAMIDE

Sodium Sulphacetamide is a sulfonamide antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is commonly used in the treatment of bacterial infections of the eye such as conjunctivitis and other conditions as determined by a doctor.

Indications

-Bacterial conjunctivitis -Blepharitis -Trachoma -Keratitis -Other bacterial eye infections


Dosage

-Adults: Typically, 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 2-3 hours initially, then reduce as symptoms improve. -Children: Dosage and administration should be determined by a pediatrician.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to sodium sulfacetamide or any other sulfonamides. -Patients with severe reactions to sulfonamides, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis.


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of allergies or asthma. -Avoid prolonged use as it may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. -Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. -Not recommended for use while breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary.


Side Effects

-Stinging or burning of the eye -Redness or itching of the eye -Swelling of the eyelids -Severe allergic reactions (rare)


Drug Interactions

-May interact with other sulfa drugs. -Concurrent use with other eye medications should be monitored by a healthcare professional.
