SPIRAMYCIN

It binds irreversibly to the 50 s Ribosomal subunit of the microbial cell, thereby inhibiting microbial protein synthesis. It is capable of intracellular penetration; including macrophages, thus eliminating intracellular pathogens in active as well as carrier stages of the disease

Indications

Respiratory tract infections, prostatitis, urethritis, impetigo, folliculitis. Toxoplasmosis in pregnant women, children.


Dosage

Below 1 yrs: 0.375 M.I.U. (1 tsf.), 1- 2 yrs: 2x 0.375 M.I.U. (2 tsf.), 3-5 yrs: 3x 0.375 M.I.U. (3 tsf.),6-9 yrs: 1.5 M.I.U. (1 tab), 10-12 yrs: 2.25 M.I.U. (11/2 tabs), above 12 yrs: 3.0 M.I.U. (2 tabs). All twice daily. Toxoplamosis: Pregnant women: 6-9 M.I.U. (4-6 tabs) daily in 2-4 div doses. Three week course should be continually repeated after 2 week intervals till parturition. Children: 0.15 M.I.U.-0.1 M.I.U. (1 ml to 2 ml) per Kg. twice daily for 4-6 weeks.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.


Special Precautions

Lactation.


Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea & skin allergy.


Drug Interactions

Synergistic with metronidazole, may potentiate the action of theophylline, carbamazepine, warfarin. Digoxin increases the blood level. Terfenadine and astemizole increases the risk of the adverse effect on the heart.
