STERILE MEDROXYPROGESTRONE ACETATE SUSP.

Sterile Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (MPA) is a synthetic progestin used primarily as a long-acting contraceptive and in the treatment of various gynecological disorders. It is available in an injectable form, often administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously for long-lasting effects. Medroxyprogesterone acetate works by inhibiting the release of gonadotropins, preventing ovulation and thickening the cervical mucus, which impedes sperm movement and reduces the likelihood of fertilization.

Indications

Contraception (Ovulation suppression), endometriosis, adjunctive or palliative treatment for recurrent and/or metastatic breast endometrial or renal carcinoma; menopausal vasomotor symptoms.


Dosage

Contraception: 150mg every 3 months by deep, i.m. injection. Endometriosis: 50mg weekly or 100mg every 2 wks i.m. for atleast 6 months. Endometrial or renal carcinoma: 400 to 1000mg i.m. ry wk.Breast cancer: 500mg/day i.m. for 28 days. Menopausal symptoms: 150mg i.m. every 12 wks.


Contra-Indications

Patients sensitive to steriods, pregnacy.


Special Precautions

Exclude breast or genital neoplasia, thromboembolic disorder. Patient may develop weight gain & fluid retention. High doses used in the treatment of cancer patients may cause Cushingoid symptoms.


Side Effects

Anaphylaxis and anaphylactoid reactions; thromboembolic disorders; nervousness, insomnia, somnolence, fatigue, depression, dizziness and headache, urticaria, pruritus, rash, acne, hirsutism, alopecia, nausea, breast tenderness and galactorrhea.


Drug Interactions

Concomitant aminoglutethimide administration may reduce bioavailability.
