SULFADOXINE + PYRIMETHAMINE

For treatment of acute attack of Chloroquine resistant P.falciparum. Sulfadoxine is ultra long acting sulfonamide, good for weekly prophylactic or suppressive therapy.

Indications

Chloroquine resistant malaria.


Dosage

Prophylaxis: 2 tabs. Children 6-10 yrs; 1-2 tabs at intervals of 1 month. Treatment: 2-3 tabs in single dose. Children 20 mg/kg body wt of sulfadoxine and 1 mg/kg body wt of pyrimethamine as a single dose.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to sulphona mides, severe liver or kidney dysfunction. Blood dyscrasias. Neonates. Pregnancy, lactation.


Special Precautions

In term prophylaxis perform regular blood counts. G-6PD deficiency.


Side Effects

G.I disorders, skin rashes, pharyngitis or pruritus occurs. Erythema multiforme.


Drug Interactions

Artemether + Lumefantrine, Cyclosporine, Glibenclamide, Methotrexate, Phenytoin, Warfarin.
