Sulphacetamide

Sulphacetamide is a sulfonamide antibiotic used topically to treat bacterial infections of the skin and eyes. It works by inhibiting bacterial folic acid synthesis, thereby preventing the growth of bacteria.

Indications

-Bacterial conjunctivitis -Blepharitis -Other bacterial infections of the skin


Dosage

-For Eye Infections: Typically, 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) 3-4 times daily or as directed by a physician. -For Skin Infections: Apply a thin layer to the affected area 1-2 times daily or as directed by a healthcare provider.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or any component of the formulation. -Patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to sulfonamides.


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of hypersensitivity reactions. -Avoid contact with the eyes or mucous membranes when applying topically. -If irritation or sensitivity develops, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.


Side Effects

-Local irritation or redness at the site of application -Allergic reactions (rare) -Dryness or peeling of the skin (when used topically)
