SULPHAGUANIDINE
Sulphaguanidine is a sulfonamide antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It is primarily used for gastrointestinal infections, particularly those caused by susceptible strains of bacteria.-Gastrointestinal Infections: Effective against certain bacterial infections in the gut. -Enteric Fever: Treatment of fever caused by bacterial infections.
-Adults: Typically, the dosage ranges from 1 to 2 grams daily, divided into 2-4 doses. -Children: Dosage is usually adjusted based on body weight and severity of infection.
-Hypersensitivity: Contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides. -Severe Renal Impairment: Not recommended for patients with severe kidney dysfunction. -Pregnancy: Should be used with caution during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester.
-Renal Function: Monitor renal function periodically during treatment. -Hematologic Monitoring: Regular blood counts are advised to detect any adverse effects on blood cells. -Allergic Reactions: Watch for signs of allergic reactions, including rash, fever, or systemic symptoms.
-Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. -Serious: Allergic reactions, hematologic disorders (such as agranulocytosis), and renal complications. -Rare: Stevens-Johnson syndrome and other severe skin reactions.
-Oral Anticoagulants: May enhance the effects of anticoagulants. -Methenamine: May interfere with the effectiveness of methenamine. -Other Sulfonamides: Increased risk of adverse effects if combined with other sulfonamide drugs.
