Sulpiride

Sulpiride

Sulpiride is a psychotropic agent belonging to the benzamide class. It primarily acts as a selective dopamine D2 receptor antagonist.

Indications

Sulpiride is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia, depressive disorders, and other psychiatric conditions where dopamine dysregulation plays a role.

Dosage

The dosage of Sulpiride varies depending on the condition being treated and individual patient response. It is typically administered orally, and dosing should be tailored to the patient's needs under medical supervision.

Contra-Indications

Sulpiride is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to sulpiride or any component of the formulation. It should not be used in patients with pheochromocytoma, severe renal impairment, or severe hepatic impairment.

Special Precautions

Caution should be exercised when prescribing Sulpiride to elderly patients, patients with a history of seizures, cardiovascular diseases, or in combination with other medications that may prolong the QT interval.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Sulpiride include extrapyramidal symptoms (such as tremor, dystonia, akathisia), hyperprolactinemia, sedation, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Rare but serious side effects include neuroleptic malignant syndrome and tardive dyskinesia.

Drug Interactions

Sulpiride may interact with other medications, including antipsychotics, antidepressants, antihypertensives, and drugs that prolong the QT interval. Close monitoring and dose adjustments may be necessary when co-administering Sulpiride with these medications.
