SYNTHETIC OXYTOCIN

Synthetic Oxytocin is a medication used to stimulate uterine contractions during labor, control bleeding after childbirth, and induce abortion. It mimics the natural hormone oxytocin produced by the pituitary gland.

Indications

-Induction of labor -Augmentation of labor -Management of postpartum hemorrhage -Induction of abortion


Dosage

-Initial dose: 0.5-1 milliunits/minute IV infusion. -Incremental increase: 1-2 milliunits/minute every 30-60 minutes until a desired contraction pattern is achieved. -Maximum dose: 20 milliunits/minute.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to oxytocin or any component of the formulation -Significant cephalopelvic disproportion -Fetal distress where delivery is not imminent -Hypertonic uterine patterns -Active genital herpes infection


Special Precautions

-Continuous fetal monitoring is essential. -Monitor uterine contractions and maternal blood pressure frequently. -Use caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders or those receiving concomitant vasopressors. -Avoid use in cases where vaginal delivery is not indicated.


Side Effects

-Nausea and vomiting -Uterine hyperstimulation -Hypotension or hypertension -Water intoxication (with prolonged use) -Allergic reactions (rash, anaphylaxis)


Drug Interactions

-Increased effect with prostaglandins -Enhanced hypertensive effect with vasoconstrictors and sympathomimetics -Increased risk of QT prolongation with certain drugs (e.g., macrolide antibiotics, antipsychotics)
