Tadalafil

Tadalafil, an oral treatment for erectile dysfunction, is a selective inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5).

Indications

-Erectile dysfunction (ED) -Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) -Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)


Dosage

10mg, taken prior to anticipated sexual activity. The dose may be increased to 20mg or decreased to 5mg, based on individual efficacy and tolerability to tadalafil


Contra-Indications

-Individuals taking nitrates (such as nitroglycerin) for chest pain should avoid tadalafil due to the risk of a significant drop in blood pressure. -Those with known hypersensitivity to tadalafil or its components should not take this medication. -Use caution with certain heart conditions and those who have had a recent stroke or heart attack.


Special Precautions

-Tadalafil should be used with caution in individuals with cardiovascular conditions. -Liver or kidney impairment may require dose adjustments. -Alcohol consumption should be limited as it may increase the risk of side effects. -Vision and hearing loss have been reported in rare cases; seek medical attention if you experience these symptoms.


Side Effects

-Common side effects include headache, dyspepsia, back pain, muscle aches, nasal congestion, and flushing. -Rare but serious side effects include a sudden decrease or loss of vision or hearing and prolonged erections lasting more than 4 hours (priapism). -Report any serious side effects to your healthcare provider immediately.


Drug Interactions

-Tadalafil may interact with other medications such as alpha-blockers, antihypertensives, and certain antibiotics. -Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can increase the blood levels of tadalafil and the risk of side effects.
