Tamsulosin Hydrochloride

It is a selective 1A and 1D adrenoreceptor antagonist. 1A and 1D receptors are predominant in prostate, prostatic capsule, prostatic urethra and bladder. The relaxation of prostate and bladder smooth muscle helps to urine flow and reduction of lower urinary tract symptoms. Bioavailability of 100% under fasting conditions. Half-life of a single dose of 0.4 mg is estimated to be 14 to 15 hours. It is approximately 99% plasma protein bound to primarily a1 acid glycoprotein.

Indications

Tamsulosin Hydrochloride is prescribed for the management of symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It helps improve urinary flow and reduce symptoms like frequent or urgent need to urinate.


Dosage

-400mcg daily those who do not respond after two or four weeks, dose can be increased to 800mcg once daily. -Children : Not indicated.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to the drug, in severely impaired hepatic function and severely impaired kidney functions. Pregnancy and lactation : Not indicated.


Special Precautions

Patients with a history of orthostatic hypotension should use Tamsulosin with caution as it may cause dizziness or fainting. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is advised. It should also be used cautiously in patients undergoing cataract or glaucoma surgery.


Side Effects

Headache, infection, asthenia, back pain, dizziness, insomnia, rhinitis, cough, sinusitis, nausea, abnormal ejaculation.


Drug Interactions

Tamsulosin may interact with other medications such as blood pressure-lowering drugs, antifungal medications (e.g., ketoconazole), and other alpha-blockers. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are taking.
