Telithromycin
It is a semi-synthetic erythromycin derivative and categorized as a ketolide.It is indicated for the treatment of community acquired pneumonia caused due to susceptible bacteria for patients 18 years older and above.
800 mg (2 tablets of 400mg) taken orally once every 24 hours, for 7-10 days. Can be taken with or without food.
It is contraindicated in cases of Myasthenia Gravis due to risk of fatal and life threatening Acute Respiratory Failure, It is also contraindicated in cases of hepatic dysfunction or hypersensitivity or Telithromycin or any of its constitutents. Pregnancy Category C medication- to be given to pregnant women only after justifying potential risk to the fetus.
Hepatotoxicity, QTc prolongation, visual disturbances, loss of consciousness, Pseudomembranous colitis.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness.
Concomitant administration with cisapride or pimozide is contraindicated. It is also contraindicated concomitantly with colchicine. Serious adverse reactions have also been reported with CYP3A4 inhibitors, Statins, Midazolam, and Calcium-channel Blockers metabolized by CYP3A4.
