Absorption is better if taken in empty stomach. Tetracyclines have chelating property and form insoluble and unabsorbable complexes with calcium and other metals.Milk, iron preparation and non systemic antacids reduce their absorption

Indications

Mixed bacterial infections of respiratory, genito-urinary and gastro-intestinal systems.


Dosage

1-2 gm daily in 4 divided doses


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity. Latter half of pregnancy, Lactation


Special Precautions

Renal or hepatic impairment Milk, antacids, mineral supplements, oral contraceptives. Paediatrics: Not recommended under 8 years. Reduced dose is necessary in older children. Pregnancy: May discolour the teeth of the developing foetus. Lactation: May discolour the teeth of the baby. Elderly: No special problem.


Side Effects

G.I. disturbance, Tooth discolouration, enamel hypoplasia, reduces fibula growth rate. Avoid use in children below 8 yrs unless no alternative drug.


Drug Interactions

Reduces activity of some penicillines. Affects stability of anticoagulant control. Blood levels reduced by anticonvulsants. Increases blood levels of carbamazepine and phenytoin, Increases toxic effects of lithium. Increase digoxin levels. Absorption reduced by dairy products, iron, antacids.
