TOLFENAMIC ACID

It is non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase (COX), Cyclo-oxygenase is involved in the production of various chemicals in the body, some of which are known as prostaglandins.

Indications

-Tolfenamic acid is indicated for the relief of mild to moderate pain associated with conditions such as headache, dental pain, menstrual pain, musculoskeletal disorders, and postoperative pain. It is also used in the management of acute migraine attacks. -Acute attack of migraine.


Dosage

-The dosage of tolfenamic acid varies depending on the severity of the pain and the patient's age and medical condition. It is usually taken orally with a full glass of water, preferably with food to minimize gastrointestinal irritation. -Oral; 100-200mg thrice a day.


Contra-Indications

-Tolfenamic acid is contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to NSAIDs or any of the ingredients in the formulation. It should not be used in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, severe renal impairment, or heart failure. -Hypersensitivity to aspirin or related drugs, pregnancy (3rd trimester), hepatic and renal impairment.


Special Precautions

Asthma, bronchospasm, bleeding, disorders, CV diseases, history of peptic ulceration, hypertension, patients with infections, liver, cardiac, or renal function impairment. Increase water intake or dose reduction to reduce dysuria. CHF;elderly;lactation.


Side Effects

erythema, headache. Tremor, euphoria, fatigue pulmonary infiltration, dysuria especially in males;diarrhoea,nausea,epigastric pain,vomiting,dyspepsia,blood dyscrasias,toxic hepatitis.


Drug Interactions

-Tolfenamic acid may interact with other medications, including anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, corticosteroids, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and certain antihypertensive drugs. It is important to inform the healthcare provider about all medications being taken to avoid potential interactions. -Metoclopromide,lithium,methotrexate and cardiac glycosides.
