TRIFLUPROMAZINE

Its general properties are similar to those of chlorpromazine i.e., antagonism at central dopamine D2 receptors. Reduction of dopaminergic activity in the limbic system. Prominent anti-emetic activity.

Indications

Nausea & vomiting due to radiation sickness, anticancer drugs, uraemia, gastroenteriis. First trimester vomiting. Pre/post-operative sedation. Anxiety/tension. Psychiatric disorders. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome.


Dosage

Orally: 20-50 mg in divided doses. Intravenously: 1-3 mg /day. Intramuscularly: 5-10 mg/day.


Contra-Indications

Coma, severe depression due to alcohol or centrally acting depressants. Parkinson's disease.


Special Precautions

Epilepsy, narrow angle glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, BPH, caution while combining with antidepressant or anti-coagulant drugs. Paediatrics: Not recommended below 6 years. Pregnancy: Safety not established. Lactation: Contraindicated. Elderly: Use only if clearly indicated, in reduced dose.


Side Effects

Blood dyscrasias, ventricular tachyarrhythmias, malignant neuroleptic syndrome. Blurred vision, dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation, orthostatic hypotension, allergic rash, akathisia, dystonias, muscle weakness, anorexia, insomnia.


Drug Interactions

Poentiates other CNS depressants (sedatives, hypnotics, antihistaminics, opiates and alcohol.
