Ursodiol

Ursodiol is a bile acid used to dissolve gallstones and to treat primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a liver disease.

Indications

-Dissolution of radiolucent cholesterol gallstones -Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) -Liver disease associated with cystic fibrosis


Dosage

-For gallstone dissolution: Typically, 8-10 mg/kg/day divided into 2-3 doses. -For primary biliary cholangitis: Usually, 13-15 mg/kg/day divided into 2-4 doses.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to ursodiol or any component of the formulation -Acute inflammation of the gallbladder or biliary tract -Complete biliary obstruction -Chronic liver disease


Special Precautions

-Regular monitoring of liver function tests -Use with caution in patients with liver impairment -Monitor cholesterol levels periodically


Side Effects

-Diarrhea -Constipation -Nausea -Abdominal pain -Rash -Dizziness


Drug Interactions

-Bile acid sequestrants (e.g., cholestyramine) may reduce the effectiveness of ursodiol -Estrogens, oral contraceptives, and clofibrate may increase biliary cholesterol secretion and counteract the effects of ursodiol -Antacids containing aluminum may interfere with ursodiol absorption
