VALETHAMATE

Smooth muscle relaxants useful especially in delayed dilation of cervix during delivery.

Indications

Smooth muscle spasm, symptomatic treatment of visceral spasm, painful spasm of genitourinary or biliary origin.


Dosage

When the os-uteri has dilated to about 2-4 cm, 1 ml injection containing 8 mg valethamate to be given by deep i.m. route. It can be repeated after 20 minutes if required.


Contra-Indications

Potentiated by other antispasmodics, some antihistamines, pheno-thiazine, disopyramide and quinidine, delayed gastric emptying reduces absorption of other drugs.


Special Precautions

CVS disease, thyrotoxicosis, hypertension. Paediatrics: Not recommended. Pregnancy: Use under medical supervision. Elderly: Not recommended.


Side Effects

Potentiated by other antispasmodics, antihistamines, phenothiazine, disopyramide and quinidine


Drug Interactions

Valathamate is known to interact with other drugs like amantadine antihistamines phenothiazide antipsychotics TCAs antagonise GI effects of domperidone metoclopramide.
