VANCOMYCIN

VANCOMYCIN

Is a complex glycopeptide found in cultures of Streptomyces Orientalis It is bactericidal to gram positive cocci and certain gram positive bacilli. The mode of action is by impairing cell membrane permeabilityand RNA synthesis or by inhibition of cell wall synthesis.

Indications

Antibiotic associated colitis, endocarditis, bacteraemia, meningitis, prophylaxis & in treatment of infection in dialysis patients and after cytotoxic drug therapy.


Dosage

Adults 50mg every 6 hourly or 1gm every 12 hours by i.v infusion over 60min for 7-10 days. Children 10mg/kg every 6 hourly or 40mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses by slow i.v infusion over 60min for 7-10 days .


Contra-Indications

In patients with history of allergy.


Special Precautions

Paediatrics: Use with caution in neonates. Pregnancy: Use with caution. Lactation: Use with caution. Elderly: Use with caution


Side Effects

Skin rashes,red neck,flushing,drug fever.


Drug Interactions

Additive action with other nephrotoxic & ototoxic drugs.
