VANCOMYCIN
Is a complex glycopeptide found in cultures of Streptomyces Orientalis It is bactericidal to gram positive cocci and certain gram positive bacilli. The mode of action is by impairing cell membrane permeabilityand RNA synthesis or by inhibition of cell wall synthesis.Antibiotic associated colitis, endocarditis, bacteraemia, meningitis, prophylaxis & in treatment of infection in dialysis patients and after cytotoxic drug therapy.
Adults 50mg every 6 hourly or 1gm every 12 hours by i.v infusion over 60min for 7-10 days. Children 10mg/kg every 6 hourly or 40mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses by slow i.v infusion over 60min for 7-10 days .
In patients with history of allergy.
Paediatrics: Use with caution in neonates. Pregnancy: Use with caution. Lactation: Use with caution. Elderly: Use with caution
Skin rashes,red neck,flushing,drug fever.
Additive action with other nephrotoxic & ototoxic drugs.
