It is a non benzodiazepine hypnotic agent, a member of the cyclopyrrolone group of compounds. It has high affinity for CNS binding sites of the GABA macromolecule receptor complex, inducing conformational changes which differ from those of established hypnotics. It rapidly initiate sleep without reduction of total REM sleep and then sustain it with preservation of normal slow wave sleep.


Short term treatment of insomnia, including difficulty in falling asleep, nocturnal awakening and early awakening, transient situational or chronic insomnia, and insomnia secondary to psychiatric disturbances.


Adult: 7.5-15 mg shortly before retiring Elderly: 3.75 mg. May be increased if necessary Children: Appropriate dose has not been established.


Decompensated respiratory insufficiency, Myasthenia gravis.

Special Precautions

Concomitant use of alcohol and other CNS depressants should be avoided. Paediatrics: Contraindicated. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Contraindicated. Elderly: Use with caution.

Side Effects

Mild metalic after taste, nausea, vomiting and urticaria.

Drug Interactions

Alcohol or other centrally action antidepressants, imipramine.
