Kerala doctor stabbed to death; IMA demands laws to prevent violence

The demise of Dr Vandana Das has shaken the medical fraternity across the country. Dr Das, a House Surgeon at Azeezia Medical College posted in Government Taluk Headquarters Hospital, Kottarakara in Kollam district Kerala, was stabbed to death by a patient whom she was treating. 

The IMA said that the doctor was brutally murdered by a patient while she was treating him.  

“IMA strongly condemns the same and we want to stress the importance of taking action to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. We strongly urge the authorities to take strict action against the culprits for the heinous act and to ensure that the culprit should be punished to the fullest extent of the Law,” the IMA added.

 The national doctors’ body added that IMA stands in solidarity with the medical doctors and all healthcare workers who put their lives on the line every day to provide essential medical care to those in need.

 “IMA also calls for the implementation of Central Laws and measures to prevent violence against healthcare professionals in their workplaces and declare hospitals as safe zones,” the IMA said.

“IMA places on record its deep sense of sorrow for the sad and unfortunate demise of a young doctor. May God place the holy soul in heaven and give strength to the family members to bear this irreparable loss,” the IMA added.

As per reports, the accused has been identified as 42-year-old Sandeep. He is a teacher.
