Springer Nature and Department of Atomic Energy Forge Historic Open Access Agreement

In a groundbreaking move, Springer Nature has forged a transformative agreement (TA) with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), India. This landmark deal, the first of its kind by any publicly funded department in India, signals a significant leap forward for the country's research and academic community.

The agreement grants access to all 50+ centers affiliated with the DAE to read and publish Gold Open Access (OA) articles in Springer Nature's 2,000+ hybrid journals across various disciplines. Gold OA allows immediate online publication of articles, making them freely available for all to access and reuse from the moment of publication. This initiative marks a pivotal milestone in the quest for universal access to research findings and underscores a joint commitment to advancing open science.

This development builds upon the longstanding partnership between Springer Nature and the DAE. Both entities will collaborate to promote open access principles and eliminate barriers to the dissemination of scholarly research. The agreement encompasses a range of initiatives aimed at fostering innovation, transparency, research integrity, and accessibility in academic publishing.

By embracing Gold OA, Indian research will enjoy heightened visibility and impact, facilitating greater international collaboration and knowledge exchange. Carolyn Honour, Chief Commercial Officer of Springer Nature Group, expressed her delight at the extension of the partnership with the DAE, emphasizing the transformative potential of the collaboration to advance scientific discovery and increase publishing options for Indian researchers.

Dr. Arun Kumar Nayak, Head of Nuclear Controls and Planning Wing at the Department of Atomic Energy, lauded the agreement as a historic moment for the scientific community within the DAE and the country at large. He attributed the success of the agreement to the visionary leadership within the department, paving the way for future agreements that will showcase India's scientific prowess on the global stage.

Dr. Deepali Kuberkar, Head of the Department of Library Sciences at TMC & Coordinator of One DAE One Subscription (ODOS), hailed ODOS as a crucial milestone for the DAE and its scientific community. She expressed optimism about the collaboration with Springer Nature and reiterated their commitment to advancing knowledge and learning.

With an estimated benefit to over 5,000 researchers within the DAE, the agreement promises simplified workflows and an enhanced author journey. This partnership exemplifies a collaborative approach to advancing open access publishing and fostering the free exchange of knowledge. Its transformative impact on the academic publishing landscape in India sets the stage for broader discussions on potential national or regional agreements in the future.
