Indian Armed Forces Medical Officers Shine at World Medical and Health Games Record-Breaking Medal Haul

Four officers from the Indian Armed Forces Medical Service (AFMS) have brought immense pride to the nation by securing a record 32 medals at the 43rd World Medical and Health Games. Held in Saint-Tropez, France, from June 16 to 23, 2024, this prestigious event saw Lt Col Sanjeev Malik, Maj Anish George, Capt Stephen Sebastian, and Capt Dania James making history with their exceptional performances.


The AFMS officers clinched a total of 19 Gold, 9 Silver, and 4 Bronze medals in various athletic events, showcasing their prowess and dedication. Lt Col Sanjeev Malik VSM, competing in the Above 35 yrs Male Category, dominated the track events, winning five Gold Medals in the 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, Cross Country, and 4x100m Relay.

Maj Anish George, competing in the Under 35 yrs Male Category, displayed versatility, earning four Gold, six Silver, and two Bronze Medals in events including 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, Javelin, Shot Put, Discus Throw, Hammer Throw, and Powerlifting. Capt Stephen Sebastian, also competing in the Under 35 yrs Male Category, excelled in sprints and field events, securing six Gold Medals in the 100m, 200m, 400m, Long Jump, Hammer Throw, and 4x100m Relay. Capt Dania James, competing in the Under 35 yrs Female Category, achieved four Gold, three Silver, and two Bronze Medals in events such as the 100m, 200m, 4x100m Relay, Javelin, Discus Throw, Shot Put, Badminton Solo, Badminton Doubles, and Powerlifting.

Lt Gen Daljit Singh, the Director General of AFMS, congratulated the officers for their remarkable achievements and expressed confidence in their potential to bring more laurels in the future.

The World Medical and Health Games, often likened to the Olympic Games for Health Professionals, is the foremost global sporting event in the medical community. Since its inception in 1978, it has grown significantly, attracting over 2,500 participants from more than 50 countries each year.

The outstanding performance of the Indian AFMS officers not only highlights their athletic excellence but also underscores the dedication and multifaceted talents of healthcare professionals worldwide. Their achievements serve as a beacon of inspiration for doctors and nurses across India, encouraging them to pursue fitness and athleticism alongside their medical careers.
