IAP Launches 'Tackling Cough with Care' Campaign to Empower Parents and Safeguard Child Health

The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) has launched its latest initiative, "Tackling Cough with Care," aiming to address the prevalent issue of childhood cough and its complications. This marks the IAP's 8th awareness campaign, following positive feedback on previous efforts focused on child health topics like obesity, measles, autism, Down syndrome, and thalassemia.

Under the ongoing "IAP Ki Baat, Community Ke Saath" campaign, aligned with the 2024 and 2025 Presidential Action Plan, the new initiative intends to engage communities annually over the next two years. It seeks to educate and empower parents and caregivers with accurate information on managing childhood cough effectively.

Cough is one of the most common symptoms in children, especially among infants and pre-schoolers, often caused by viral infections and allergies. The campaign stresses the importance of timely immunizations against infectious diseases and teaching proper cough etiquette to prevent infections from spreading. It also highlights the role of avoiding irritants like tobacco smoke and strong fragrances at home to reduce allergic cough.

Dr. GV Basavaraja, National IAP President for 2024, emphasized the campaign's significance in reducing antibiotic misuse among children. "Our aim is to educate parents through digital platforms, physical media, and Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions," he stated, underlining efforts to conduct awareness campaigns in schools nationwide.

Dr. Vasant Khalatkar, National President for 2025, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing collaborative efforts to dispel misconceptions and promote best practices in cough management. The campaign's expert team, led by Convenor Dr. S Nagabhushana and including renowned pediatric specialists, ensures the accurate dissemination of information.

Key figures from the IAP, including Dr. GV Basavaraja and Dr. Vasant Khalatkar, will unveil awareness posters and videos virtually as part of this initiative. Their goal is to equip communities with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their children's health, ultimately contributing to better overall well-being.
