MDNIY Hosts Lecture on Yoga and Diet with Vaidya Prof. Kamlesh Kumar Sharma

The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) recently held a special lecture exploring the intersection of Yoga and diet, delivered by the esteemed Vaidya Prof. Kamlesh Kumar Sharma, former professor at the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur. The lecture was attended by Dr. Kashinath Samagandi, Director of MDNIY, along with a diverse audience of Yoga practitioners and students.

Prof. Sharma, a distinguished figure in Ayurvedic medicine, referenced the Chandogya Upanishad to emphasize the profound connection between diet and Yoga. He remarked, “Anna is the visible Ishwara. It is the fuel, but our Drishti regarding Anna is also important. When diet is taken in a balanced manner and the goals of diet are accomplished, only then Yoga is accomplished.”

The professor detailed several crucial dietary guidelines, including the timing and content of meals. He recommended a regimen of three meals: breakfast between 9:00 AM and 12:00 noon, a mid-day meal in the early evening, and dinner in the early hours of the night. Prof. Sharma stressed that a balanced diet is essential for enhancing the benefits of Yoga practices, asserting that proper nutrition is key to maintaining bodily equilibrium and maximizing the effectiveness of Yoga asanas.

Dr. Kashinath Samagandi reinforced the lecture's message by citing the Bhagavad Gita, underscoring the importance of integrating diet and lifestyle with Yoga practices. “Diet is a major survival factor. When we attend to Achaar-Vichaar (conduct and behavior) and Ahaar-Vihar (diet and lifestyle), we can fulfill the goals of Yoga through Yogic Kriyas, such as Yogasanas, Pranayama, and Yoga Nidra,” he stated.

The session provided valuable insights and practical advice, leaving attendees appreciative of the expert guidance on how to harmonize diet with Yoga for overall well-being.
