Mother Seeks Justice After Son Dies Allegedly Without Treatment at RG Kar Hospital Amidst Ongoing Protests

In a tragic turn  of events, a 22-year old young man lost his life after allegedly nor receiving treatment at the RG Kar Hospital where he was brought after meeting with an accident.

The mother of 22-year-old Bikram, the deceased, Kavita, claimed, according to media report that her son passed away at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata from inadequate prompt medical treatment.

She further alleged that when she arrived at the hospital following a lorry accident that left her son with a major leg injury, she said that no doctor was present to treat her son upon arrival. Despite her best efforts to locate aid between the hospital's OPD and the emergency room, Bikram died in front of her.

Sharing her loss, Kavita said, "My son died in front of my eyes." Therte were no doctors on hand, he was in excruciating agony. Justice for my son, as well as for the deceased doctor, is what I desire. However, why did the service cease? Are they exacting retribution against common people?

Her allegations were denied by hospital authorities, who stated that Bikram was hospitalized on Friday at 9:10 AM and underwent X-rays and CT scans, among other required procedures. He did not show a response to treatment that was given.

Despite these claims, Kavita asserted that the hospital neglected her son's urgent condition by not performing a CT scan.

This episode coincides with increased state-wide demonstrations over the rape and murder of a resident physician at the same institution. Around the state, demonstrations calling for justice have attracted notable participation from teachers, students, and civil society organisations. Many perceive these demonstrations as a broader criticism of the government-run healthcare system.

Disruptions in healthcare services resulting from ongoing protests by junior doctors have added to the debate. Chairman of Konnagar Municipality Swapan Das expressed concern, questioning what would happen if health services were to cease? When lives are at stake, who will the people turn to?

Recognizing their demands but stressing the importance of ongoing treatment, Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee advised protesting physicians to make sure their agitation does not interfere with patient services.
