Growing Infertility Issues: The Impact of Delayed Marriages on Reproductive Health

In recent years, delayed marriages have become increasingly common due to various personal, professional, and societal factors.

However, for many couples, marrying later in life can bring unexpected challenges, particularly when it comes to starting a family. According to statistics, 10% to 15% of couples who marry later experience difficulties with infertility, which can have a profound impact not only on their reproductive health but also on their mental well-being.

In India, infertility is a significant yet under-acknowledged issue. Despite its prevalence, it is often overlooked in public health discussions, leaving couples grappling with its long-term effects on their reproductive and productive lives. As more couples delay marriage, the conversation around infertility becomes increasingly important.

Fortunately, advancements in reproductive science have led to several safe and effective treatment options that can help couples achieve their dream of parenthood. But first, it's essential to understand the causes of infertility in older couples.

Causes of Infertility in Older Couples

Dr. Archana Dhawan Bajaj, a renowned gynecologist, obstetrician, and IVF expert at Nurture IVF Clinic in New Delhi, highlights one of the most common issues facing late-married couples: the inability to conceive naturally. "If you’ve been trying for six months without success, it’s advisable to consult a fertility specialist, particularly for women over the age of 35," says Dr. Bajaj.

As women age, one of the primary factors contributing to infertility is a decline in egg reserve. Women are born with a finite number of eggs, and this reserve starts to diminish as they age. After the age of 35, this loss accelerates significantly, reducing the chances of natural conception.
