Delhi: World Diabetes Day Highlights Major Conference on Diabetes Awareness and Prevention

As India grapples with an escalating diabetes crisis, the 52nd Annual Conference of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) has kicked off today in Delhi, drawing attention to the urgent need for action on World Diabetes Day. Hosted at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in Dwarka, the two-day event has brought together over 5,000 healthcare professionals, experts, and thought leaders from around the globe to discuss ways to tackle the growing diabetes epidemic in India, which currently affects over 10 crore people, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The conference opened with a powerful and thought-provoking sand art installation by renowned artist Shri Sudarshan Patnaik, created in Puri. His art served as a striking visual symbol of the importance of early diabetes detection and the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices. The message was clear: we all need to pay more attention to this disease, which affects millions of people worldwide.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), took center stage during the inaugural address. He underscored the significance of initiatives like this conference, stressing that World Diabetes Day is a crucial platform for raising awareness and improving care. "We must unite to prevent complications, raise awareness, and improve the quality of life for millions affected by diabetes in India and globally," Dr. Singh said. "Efforts like those by RSSDI and IDF are vital in helping us focus on early detection and effective management of diabetes."

This year’s conference also saw the unveiling of a joint declaration by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and RSSDI. This declaration reaffirms their commitment to tackling the diabetes epidemic and ensuring that people worldwide have access to better care. Dr. B.M. Makkar, President of RSSDI, echoed the sentiment: "This declaration is a call to action. By joining forces with the IDF, we are advocating for better care, more education, and a global effort to reduce the risks of diabetes. Together, we can improve outcomes for millions of people."

A key moment at the conference was the Doctors' Pledge, where over 10,000 healthcare professionals from across India took a solemn oath to advocate for early screenings, spread awareness, and encourage healthier lifestyle choices. Dr. Sanjay Aggarwal, Diabetologist and Secretary General of RSSDI, spoke passionately about the importance of this initiative. "By educating people on the early signs of diabetes and the importance of living healthy, we can make a real difference. Our collective responsibility is to prioritize diabetes prevention and ensure early diagnosis."

Dr. Banshi Saboo, Chief Diabetologist and Chairman of Dia Care - Diabetes Care & Hormone Clinic, also emphasized the need for urgent action. "Diabetes is a national health priority, and focusing on prevention, early diagnosis, and patient education will allow individuals to take charge of their health," he said. "This will ultimately help reduce the impact of this disease on families and communities."

The conference agenda was packed with insightful sessions on various aspects of diabetes management and care. Experts dived into the complexities of diabetes in pregnancy, including gestational diabetes, as well as the connection between diabetes and conditions like PCOS, which affect both maternal and fetal health. In addition, sessions focused on the management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, exploring the latest advances in insulin therapy, glucose monitoring, and combination therapies.

RSSDI’s A-Z Diabetes Awareness Activity campaign also took center stage. Launched as part of the conference, this campaign involved doctors across India spreading vital information about diabetes through posters, flyers, and online platforms. The campaign reached millions, helping to increase public understanding of the disease and its management.

A major theme of the conference was the role of technology in diabetes care. Workshops on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in diabetes management, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM), and new therapies were among the highlights. These sessions provided healthcare providers with valuable tools to improve patient care and enhance the overall management of diabetes. The conference also covered the serious complications of diabetes, including its effects on the heart, liver, kidneys, and nervous system, encouraging attendees to take a holistic approach to care.

In addition to technological innovations, lifestyle changes were a major focus. Experts conducted masterclasses on the role of obesity in diabetes, offering practical advice on how to manage the condition through diet, exercise, and the latest treatments. There was also a dedicated session on the mental health challenges faced by individuals with diabetes, highlighting the importance of psychological support in managing the disease.

Dr. Peter Schwarz, President of the International Diabetes Federation, delivered an insightful lecture on global strategies for diabetes prevention, providing a broader perspective on how countries can adopt international standards to prevent the disease and better support their communities. Additionally, practical workshops on CPR, insulin use, manuscript writing, and case-based learning offered healthcare professionals the opportunity to sharpen their skills.

As the conference nears its conclusion, the final days will feature debates, orations, and keynote lectures covering topics such as therapeutic inertia, new treatment advancements, and key takeaways from recent clinical trials. The event has truly proven to be a crucial gathering for healthcare professionals who are committed to fighting the diabetes epidemic in India and around the world.

The 52nd Annual RSSDI Conference in Delhi has not only brought together the brightest minds in diabetes care but has also raised the collective voice for stronger action, better education, and more accessible treatment for millions affected by diabetes globally. With continued efforts from organizations like RSSDI and IDF, there is hope that we can reverse the growing diabetes trend and improve the health outcomes of individuals worldwide.
