HCG Manavata Cancer Centre Sets Milestone with Triple Simultaneous Stem Cell Transplants
In a historic medical breakthrough, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) has achieved an extraordinary feat by performing three complex stem cell transplants simultaneously. Three patients—a 52-year-old woman and two men aged 37 and 33—were admitted on October 28, 2024, and discharged together on December 1, 2024, leaving with smiles and renewed hope.
The first patient, a woman battling multiple myeloma compounded by chronic kidney disease, underwent an autologous stem cell transplant. Her condition was fraught with challenges due to significantly elevated creatinine levels, increasing the risk of acute kidney injury. However, meticulous planning and the implementation of modified protocols ensured the procedure's success, demonstrating the team’s precision and adaptability.
The second patient, a man suffering from relapsed/refractory Hodgkin lymphoma, presented a unique challenge during the initial stem cell collection. The yield was far below the required threshold, complicating the transplantation process. Anticipating similar hurdles during subsequent attempts, the medical team utilized a novel chemo-mobilization procedure, successfully collecting sufficient stem cells and completing the transplant.
For the third patient, a high-risk leukemia case posed grave threats of graft rejection and graft-versus-host disease. The team conducted a half-match allogeneic transplant, a complex procedure demanding exceptional expertise. Despite the risks, the transplant was executed successfully, showcasing the center's dedication to overcoming intricate medical challenges.
Dr. Priyatesh Dwivedi, Hemato-oncology and BMT Specialist, led the multidisciplinary team responsible for this groundbreaking achievement. Reflecting on the accomplishment, Dr. Dwivedi highlighted the team’s innovative approach and relentless commitment to patient care, stating, “Our ability to complete these transplants, despite the complexities, is a testament to the determination and skill of our entire team.”
Adding to the celebration, Dr. Raj Nagarkar, MD & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services, emphasized the center’s mission of delivering cutting-edge care with compassion. “Successfully completing three simultaneous transplants, including a critical half-match procedure, underscores the expertise and dedication of our multidisciplinary team,” he said.
This remarkable achievement builds on HCGMCC’s growing legacy in oncology and bone marrow transplant procedures, marking 26 successful transplants in just 24 months. It serves as a beacon of hope for patients facing some of the most challenging medical conditions, reaffirming the center’s role as a leader in advanced cancer care.
