WHO Launches US$56.4 Million Flash Appeal to Address Syria’s Urgent Health Crisis Amid Escalating Conflict

As Syria navigates a critical juncture following the recent transfer of authority, the World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a US$ 56.4 million flash appeal to respond to the urgent health needs of Syrians affected by years of ongoing conflict. The appeal aims to tackle the immediate humanitarian crisis while also laying the foundation for long-term recovery and resilience.

The flash appeal will focus on addressing trauma care, maintaining essential health services, preventing disease outbreaks, facilitating patient referrals, and strengthening health system coordination across the country. The WHO, in collaboration with its partners, is committed to providing comprehensive healthcare support in the coming months, targeting both immediate relief and sustainable health infrastructure improvements.

Since November 2024, the situation in Syria has intensified, with over 882,000 people displaced by escalating violence. This mass displacement has further strained the already fragile healthcare system, creating barriers to essential services and exacerbating the challenges faced by the population.

Attacks on healthcare facilities have surged, with 37 confirmed incidents reported by WHO in just the last month. These attacks have led to widespread destruction of vital infrastructure, left ambulances non-operational, and severely disrupted access to life-saving medical care for the Syrian people.

In light of these challenges, WHO’s appeal emphasizes the urgent need for protection of health facilities and healthcare workers, as well as the delivery of critical medical supplies to support ongoing efforts in trauma care and disease prevention. The international community’s continued support is crucial to ensure that Syria’s healthcare system can withstand the pressure of ongoing conflict and begin to recover in the aftermath of years of devastation.
