Reflecting on Five Years Since the Emergence of COVID-19: WHO Calls for Global Unity and Transparency

On December 31, 2019, the World Health Organization's (WHO) Country Office in China detected a media statement from the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission reporting cases of "viral pneumonia." What followed in the weeks, months, and years ahead profoundly reshaped the world as we grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHO’s Swift Global Response

As the world welcomed 2020, the WHO moved into action. Emergency systems were activated on January 1, 2020, and the global community was alerted on January 4. By mid-January, WHO had released its first comprehensive guidance for countries and collaborated with partners to publish a blueprint for the first SARS-CoV-2 laboratory test.

Throughout the crisis, WHO worked tirelessly to convene health experts, gather and analyze data, and share vital updates to help countries respond to the virus. This commitment to transparency and knowledge-sharing was pivotal in coordinating global efforts to combat the pandemic.

A Time to Reflect and Honor

Marking this five-year milestone, WHO acknowledges the lives irreversibly changed or tragically lost to COVID-19. The organization extends its gratitude to healthcare workers who made immense sacrifices and pledges to support those living with the long-term effects of the virus, including long COVID.

As the world continues to adapt, this anniversary is a reminder of the importance of learning from the pandemic to build a healthier and more resilient future.

Call for Cooperation and Transparency

One crucial question lingers: “Is the world better prepared for the next pandemic than we were for COVID-19?” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom emphasizes the critical need for global collaboration.

WHO continues to urge China to provide data and access to uncover the origins of COVID-19, describing this effort as a "moral and scientific imperative." Without transparency and cooperation, the world risks being unprepared for future epidemics and pandemics.

As the world reflects on the journey since 2019, WHO renews its call for unity, resilience, and a shared commitment to safeguarding global health.
