Delhi Strengthens Preparedness Against Respiratory Viruses, Including Human Metapneumovirus
The Director General of Health Services (DGHS), GNCTD, Dr. Vandana Bagga, has called for heightened vigilance in light of recent reports of rising respiratory illnesses in China. While no state of emergency has been declared, updates from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO) confirm that the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) does not currently pose an immediate threat as of January 2, 2025.
Although seasonal data indicates an increase in acute respiratory infections, primarily linked to the Influenza A (H1N1) strain, other viruses such as HMPV and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) are also contributing to respiratory illnesses, albeit typically mild and self-limiting. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and NCDC have reported no unusual surge in respiratory viral infections across the country.
Dr. Bagga convened a high-level meeting on January 5, 2025, with Chief District Medical Officers and the State Program Officer (IDSP) to review the city’s readiness to handle any potential escalation in respiratory illnesses. Emphasizing the importance of continuous monitoring and prompt action, the DGHS directed healthcare facilities in Delhi to ensure robust surveillance and preparedness. Hospitals have been advised to enhance their response mechanisms, including timely reporting of cases, maintaining isolation protocols, and ensuring adequate stocks of essential medicines and supplies. Collaborative efforts with private hospitals are also being encouraged to strengthen treatment and reporting processes.
The Delhi government remains committed to ensuring public health safety through active monitoring and coordination with national and international health bodies. Citizens are assured that there is no immediate cause for alarm, and assistance is available through DGHS helplines for any health-related inquiries. The authorities reaffirm their dedication to safeguarding the health and well-being of Delhi’s residents.
