Two Cases of Human Metapneumovirus Detected in Karnataka, ICMR Confirms

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed the detection of two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka. These cases were identified through routine surveillance aimed at tracking respiratory viral pathogens as part of ICMR's nationwide monitoring of respiratory illnesses.

HMPV is a respiratory virus that circulates globally, including in India, and its presence is not unprecedented. Similar cases of respiratory illnesses linked to HMPV have been documented in several countries. Current data from ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) indicate no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in the country, providing reassurance against a broader outbreak.

The confirmed cases involve two infants admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru with symptoms of bronchopneumonia. The first case is a three-month-old female infant who was diagnosed with HMPV and discharged after treatment. The second case is an eight-month-old male infant who tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025, and is currently recovering. Neither of the affected infants has a history of international travel, pointing to local transmission.

The Union Health Ministry is actively monitoring the situation through established surveillance networks. ICMR continues to track HMPV trends across the country to ensure timely intervention. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) is providing regular updates on global developments, including the situation in China, to guide ongoing measures.

India recently conducted a nationwide preparedness drill, showcasing the country’s readiness to address potential increases in respiratory illnesses. With robust public health interventions on standby, the health system is well-equipped to respond promptly if needed. These cases highlight the importance of sustained vigilance and preparedness in effectively managing respiratory illnesses and safeguarding public health.
