In a remarkable medical intervention, an 18-year-old carpenter from Pune was saved from a potentially life-threatening situation after accidentally swallowing a sharp nail while working. The teenager, experiencing severe pain, was rushed to Manipal Hospital in Baner, where an immediate X-ray revealed the foreign object lodged in the upper part of his intestine.

The sharp nail posed a significant risk of internal injury, prompting the hospital's medical team, led by Dr. Prasad Bhate, Head of Department and Senior Consultant in Gastroenterology, to act swiftly. Within two hours of the incident, an emergency endoscopy was performed to safely remove the nail.

Dr. Bhate explained, “Ingestion of foreign bodies, especially sharp items, carries serious risks, such as internal bleeding, perforation, and severe infections. In this case, the nail could have caused fatal consequences if not extracted promptly. Thanks to advanced endoscopic techniques, we were able to remove the object safely without surgery, minimizing recuperation time and preventing further complications.”

The endoscopy was made easier by the fact that the patient had not consumed food after swallowing the nail, allowing doctors to locate and remove the object with precision. The nail was found at the junction of the small intestine, a critical area where any delay could have led to serious internal injuries.
