Ankura Hospital Hosts Infection Control Workshop

Ankura Hospital Hosts Infection Control Workshop to Strengthen Patient Safety

Ankura Hospital, in collaboration with the Infection Control Academy of India (IFCAI), successfully conducted a comprehensive workshop on Infection Prevention and Control for nurses and healthcare professionals. The event, attended by 115 medical staff, featured hands-on training sessions, live demonstrations, and expert lectures designed to equip participants with the latest infection control strategies.

With healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) posing a significant challenge, the workshop aimed to enhance awareness and preparedness among medical professionals. A key highlight was an interactive demonstration on central line insertion and maintenance, led by Dr. Vishrut Joshi, Consultant Pediatric Intensivist, and Dr. Siddharth Madabhushi, Consultant Neonatologist and Pediatrician, both from Ankura Hospital. The session provided participants with valuable practical exposure to critical infection control techniques.

In addition to HAIs, the workshop covered essential topics such as infection prevention in operating theaters and ICUs, diagnostic stewardship, occupational safety, and the role of nurses in infection control. A CSSD (Central Sterile Services Department) recall mock drill further reinforced best practices in sterilization and hospital hygiene.

Dr. Ranga Reddy Burri, President of IFCAI and Chief Guest, addressed the gathering on the global and Indian scenario of infection control, emphasizing how HAIs contribute to increased morbidity, prolonged hospital stays, and financial burdens on patients and healthcare systems.

The nursing team at Ankura Hospital, represented by Mr. Shijo NS, Ms. Chithra (ICN), and Ms. Leena, underscored the critical role of nurses in infection control. "Nurses are the backbone of infection prevention. Their vigilance, training, and adherence to protocols are pivotal in curbing the spread of infections," they emphasized.

Highlighting the impact of HAIs on mothers and newborns, Maj (Dr.) Jyothsna Venkatesh, Infection Control Consultant (Group Level), Ankura Hospital, Pune, noted, "For mothers, HAIs can lead to surgical site infections, postpartum sepsis, or urinary tract infections, prolonging recovery. For newborns, conditions like neonatal sepsis, pneumonia, or bloodstream infections can cause long-term health issues. Implementing strict hand hygiene and a bundle care approach significantly reduces these risks."

The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from nurses and healthcare professionals, reflecting their commitment to strengthening infection prevention measures and ensuring safer healthcare environments.
