Mumbai Initiative Offers Relief to Thousands of Hospital Caregivers, Saving Families Lakhs in Food Costs

In the high-pressure environment of Mumbai’s government hospitals and cancer care centers, caregivers face immense emotional, physical, and financial challenges while attending to their ailing loved ones. Recognizing the critical need for nutritional support, Akshaya Chaitanya has launched the Swasthya Ahara program—an initiative providing free, nutritious meals to caregivers, ensuring they have the strength and well-being to continue their vital role.

Bridging the Nutrition Gap

Each day, thousands of caregivers travel from the city’s outskirts and beyond to tend to their hospitalized family members. The prolonged hospital stays often result in neglected self-care, including skipping meals or relying on expensive, unhealthy food options. To address this issue, Swasthya Ahara serves over 8,000 caregivers daily across 32 government and trust-run hospitals in Mumbai, offering them free, wholesome meals.

Between 12 PM and 2 PM, designated hospital spaces—established in collaboration with the Mumbai Municipal Corporation and hospital authorities—serve fresh, hygienic food. These areas are equipped with handwashing stations, clean drinking water, and comfortable seating, allowing caregivers to eat with dignity and respite from their arduous routines.

Transforming Lives Through Nutrition and Financial Relief

Beyond sustenance, the initiative alleviates significant financial strain for families already burdened with medical expenses. On average, caregivers save ₹2,000 per month on food costs, with Swasthya Ahara having contributed financial relief worth ₹292 million to date. More than 76% of beneficiaries depend on these meals as their primary source of nutrition, improving their health, reducing stress, and enhancing their ability to provide care.

For Abhinav Shinde, a 33-year-old teacher from Borivali, the program proved life-changing. When his brother was diagnosed with advanced tuberculosis, he faced mounting medical expenses. Access to free meals during the hospital stay saved him nearly ₹25,000—funds he redirected to treatment costs. “The program not only provided financial relief but also the strength I needed to support my brother,” he shared.

Scaling Up for Greater Impact

With its success, Akshaya Chaitanya is looking to expand Swasthya Ahara beyond Mumbai. Future plans include implementing GPS tracking for meal deliveries, refining caregiver feedback systems, and extending the program to more hospitals and cities across India.

“Swasthya Ahara is about more than providing meals—it’s about offering caregivers the strength and dignity they need to support their loved ones,” said Vikas Parchhanda, CEO of Akshaya Chaitanya. “By creating a dependable ecosystem of nourishment, we’re fostering a sense of security during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.”

As a not-for-profit organization committed to eradicating hunger, Akshaya Chaitanya continues to drive social change through its strategic feeding programs. With initiatives like Swasthya Ahara, the organization is ensuring that no caregiver is forced to choose between their own health and that of their loved ones—one meal at a time.
