Delhi Medical Association Condemns Assault on Doctors at Acharya Shree Bhikshu Hospital
The Delhi Medical Association (DMA) has strongly condemned the assault on young intern doctors at Acharya Shree Bhikshu Hospital, allegedly by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Harish Khurana.
The incident, which took place on the morning of August 21, has sparked outrage among the medical fraternity and reignited concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assault occurred inside the hospital’s casualty ward while an on-duty doctor was checking the vitals of patients.
Shockingly, despite the presence of security guards, no one reportedly intervened to protect the doctors from the attack.
Terming the incident “completely unacceptable,” the DMA said that violence against doctors not only inflicts physical and emotional harm on victims but also fosters fear and insecurity among all healthcare workers. “Such repeated acts of violence are extremely disturbing and cannot be tolerated,” the association said in its statement.
Senior officials engaging in such behavior, the DMA noted, not only violate basic ethics but also undermine the dignity of doctors who dedicate their lives to patient care. Expressing solidarity with the assaulted doctors, DMA President Dr. Girish Tyagi and Secretary Dr. Satish Lamba vowed that the association will continue to oppose all forms of violence against medical professionals.
“We stand firmly with our colleagues and will not allow such incidents to go unchallenged,” the statement read.
The incident adds to a growing list of violent episodes reported against healthcare workers in India, underscoring the urgent need for stricter protections and enforcement of laws safeguarding doctors in hospitals.
