India’s Metabolic Health Crisis Enters a Critical Phase: Experts Call for a Unified National Strategy

With metabolic diseases rising rapidly and affecting Indians at younger ages, healthcare experts are calling for a shift from fragmented disease management to a comprehensive, India-specific approach focused on prevention, research, clinical care, and policy action.

India is standing at a crucial turning point in its battle against metabolic diseases. The country is witnessing a growing burden of conditions linked to metabolism, including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular risks, and liver disorders, with patients increasingly developing complex combinations of these health challenges at younger ages.

Experts warn that while the nature of metabolic diseases is becoming more complicated, the current healthcare approach remains largely divided into separate specialties, treating individual conditions rather than addressing the interconnected nature of metabolic health.

Recognising the urgent need for a coordinated strategy, the Global Metabolic Health Alliance (GMHA) is initiating the Country Collective – India, a platform aimed at developing a national vision for metabolic health. As part of this effort, the India Collective of GMHA will convene a select group of leading academic experts for a Founding Identity Workshop to define India’s future direction in this rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.

The high-level strategic meeting will focus on creating a clear national metabolic health narrative and identifying scientific and implementation priorities for the coming decade. The initiative aims to bring together research, clinical practice, prevention strategies, and healthcare policy under a unified framework.

The experts will also explore areas where India can contribute original scientific insights and global leadership in metabolic health. With its large and diverse population, unique disease patterns, and growing healthcare challenges, India has the potential to become a global reference point for innovative approaches in prevention and management of metabolic disorders.

The workshop will result in the development of a strategic identity document that will serve as the foundation for future multicentric research programmes, national discussions, implementation tools, and policy engagement.

According to experts involved in the initiative, India’s metabolic disease burden requires more than isolated discussions or conventional healthcare models. A long-term vision integrating scientific evidence, healthcare delivery, community-level prevention, and policy support is essential to address the growing challenge.

The Founding Identity Workshop is deliberately designed as a focused and strategic gathering, allowing academic leaders to engage in meaningful discussions rather than a traditional ceremonial event.

The three-hour in-person workshop will be held on July 7, 2026, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the GMHA International Headquarters, Etherea, Alphathum, Tower B, 18th Floor, Sector 90, Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

The initiative aims to lay the groundwork for what could become one of the most influential academic and implementation platforms in metabolic health, positioning India not only as a participant in global healthcare conversations but also as a contributor of original ideas and solutions

As metabolic diseases continue to reshape India’s public health landscape, experts believe that building a strong national strategy today will be critical to protecting future generations from the growing impact of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and related conditions.
