Flupenthixol is a typical antipsychotic medication used primarily to treat schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. It works by affecting the balance of certain natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

Indications

-Schizophrenia -Psychotic disorders -Maintenance treatment of chronic schizophrenia


Dosage

-Adults: The usual dose ranges from 1 mg to 20 mg per day, depending on the severity of the condition and the response of the patient. -Elderly: Lower doses are typically recommended. -Children: Not recommended.


Contra-Indications

-Known hypersensitivity to flupenthixol or any of its components -Comatose states -Severe central nervous system depression -Pheochromocytoma


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, liver impairment, or epilepsy -Regular monitoring of blood counts and liver function is recommended -Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent withdrawal symptoms


Side Effects

-Sedation -Weight gain -Extrapyramidal symptoms (tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia) -Dry mouth -Constipation -Dizziness -Hypotension


Drug Interactions
