Glucocorticoids are used topically for a large variety of dermatological conditions. They benefit by virtue of their anti-inflammatory immunosuppressive, vasoconstrictor & antiproliferative(for scaling lesions) actions. The intensity of action depends on the extent of absrption to the deeper layers, thus lipophilicity of the compound determines potency to a great extent.
Indications
Eczema, psoriasis, otitis externa. Lichen simplex & planus. Anal & vulval pruritus. Contact dermatitis. Seborrhoeic dermatitis. Impetigo, furunculosis, secondary infected dermatoses, napkin rash, otitis externa, intertigonous eruptions.
Contra-Indications
Scabies, acne, perioral dermatitis, furunculosis of skin. Chikenpox & herpes. Untreated fungal or bacterial infections. Post vaccination skin erruptions.
Special Precautions
Sudden withdrawal can produce rebound exaceation of the condition. Avoid eyes. Use on face or children should be limited to 5 days.
Side Effects
Skin atrophy. Vellus hair growth. Thinning of epidermis. Telangiectasia, striae. Delayed wound healing. Fungal & bacterial infections. Systemically they can suppress adrenal pituitary. TOPICAL STEROIDS WITH ANTIMICROBIALS In cases where local inflammation is very severe or there is evidence of weeping lesions or there is superadded secondary bacterial fungal infection. Antibiotics, antifungals keratolytic agents are combined with steroidal preparation individually or in combination as the need arises.
