Dextropropoxyphene is an opioid analgesic used to relieve mild to moderate pain. It is often used in combination with other medications to enhance its pain-relieving effects.

Indications

-Mild to moderate pain relief -Often combined with other analgesics to improve efficacy


Dosage

-Adults: Typically 30-60 mg every 4-6 hours as needed. The maximum recommended dose is 360 mg per day. -Children: Dosage should be determined by a physician based on the child's age and weight.


Contra-Indications

-Allergy: Hypersensitivity to dextropropoxyphene or other opioids -Respiratory Conditions: Severe respiratory depression or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) -Severe Liver or Kidney Impairment: Dextropropoxyphene is metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidneys.


Special Precautions

-Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Should be used only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician. -Addiction Potential: Risk of dependence and abuse exists; use with caution in patients with a history of substance abuse. -Elderly: Increased sensitivity to the drug and potential for adverse effects; dosage adjustments may be necessary.


Side Effects

-Common: Drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation -Serious: Respiratory depression, allergic reactions, confusion, hallucinations


Drug Interactions

-CNS Depressants: Enhanced risk of respiratory depression and sedation when used with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other central nervous system depressants. -MAO Inhibitors: May increase the risk of severe reactions; avoid use within 14 days of MAO inhibitor therapy. -Antidepressants: Potential interaction with certain antidepressants, leading to increased side effects or reduced efficacy.
