Acamprosate

It appears to block the excitatory activity in the brain (NMDA Glutamate) and enhance the inhibitory system(GABA),. These proteins are implicated in the induction of alcohol dependence, It has been known as an "anti-craving" drug.

Indications

Alcohol abstinence.


Dosage

Oral; 2 tablets of 333mg three times a day.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.


Special Precautions

takes with meals, precaution in renalimapirement. Paediatrics: safety not yet established. Pregnancy: Category C; use if risk to fetus outweighs benefits. Lactation: not known if excreted in milk. Elderly: renal function decreases in elderly so use with caution.


Side Effects

GI disturbances(diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, asthenia), dermatological (pruritus, rash).


Drug Interactions

Naltrexone.
