Acetyl Salicylic Acid

Acetyl Salicylic Acid, widely known as Aspirin, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to reduce pain, fever, and inflammation. It is also commonly used in low doses to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes by inhibiting blood clotting.

Indications

-Relief of mild to moderate pain (e.g., headaches, toothaches, menstrual cramps) -Reduction of fever -Relief from inflammatory conditions (e.g., arthritis) -Prevention of cardiovascular events (e.g., heart attacks, strokes) in individuals at risk


Dosage

-Adults: Typically, 300-1000 mg every 4-6 hours as needed, not exceeding 4 grams per day. -Cardiovascular prevention: Usually 75-325 mg daily, as prescribed by a healthcare provider.


Contra-Indications

-Allergy to aspirin or other NSAIDs -History of gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers -Severe kidney or liver disease -Active bleeding disorders -Third trimester of pregnancy


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal issues, asthma, or liver disease. -Monitor for signs of bleeding or allergic reactions. -Discontinue use before elective surgery or invasive procedures.


Side Effects

-Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, stomach pain) -Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling) -Risk of gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers -Prolonged bleeding time


Drug Interactions

-Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) may increase bleeding risk. -Other NSAIDs can increase the risk of gastrointestinal side effects. -Certain antihypertensives (e.g., ACE inhibitors) may have reduced efficacy. -Avoid concurrent use with alcohol to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
