Acyclovir

It has been discussed in the chapter of Chemotherapeutic/antibiotics under subheading anti virals.

Indications

Infections of skin caused by Herpes simplex virus. This includes initial and recurrent genital herpes and herpes labialis.

Dosage

Apply 5 times a day app at 4 hrly interval for 5 days. For another 5 days if required.

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to Acyclovir.

Special Precautions

Not for buccal or vaginal mucous membranes. A care is necessary to avoid accidental introduction into eye. Poor renal functions. Pregnancy, lactation.

Side Effects

Local irritation, transient burning.

Drug Interactions

Probenecid decreasesurinary excretion and increase half life.
