Alfuzosin

Alfuzosin

It is a alpha1 -adrenoceptor blocker with actions similar to those of prazosin. It is used in benign prostatic hyperplasia to relieve symptoms of urinary obstruction including acute urinary retention.

Indications

Alfuzosin is indicated for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition characterized by an enlarged prostate gland that can cause urinary problems.


Dosage

2.5mg three times daily, increased to 10mg daily if necessary. A modified release preparation may also be used in a dose of 10mg once daily. In hepatic & renal impairment:- Initial dose of 2.5mg daily, increased to 2.5mg twice daily according to response, modified release preparations are contra-indicated.


Contra-Indications

Severe hepatic impairment; history of postural hypotension and micturition syncope; intestinal occlusion; severe renal insufficiency; lactation. Drug Interactions: Other alpha-blockers; calcium antagonists, general anesthetics (monitor patient carefully); itraconazole; ketoconazole, ritonavir, antihypertensives.


Special Precautions

Elderly; hypertension; coronary insufficiency; angina (discontinue); renal or hepatic impairment. Monitor blood pressure regularly. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery.


Side Effects

Adverse reactions: Drowsiness, postural hypotension, syncope, asthenia, depression, headache, dry mouth, GI disturbances, edema, blurred vision, rhinitis, erectile disorders, tachycardia, palpitation, hypersensitivity, reactions, flushes, chest pain; dizziness; lack of energy.


Drug Interactions

Other alpha-blockers; calcium antagonists, general anesthetics (monitor patient carefully); itraconazole; ketoconazole, ritonavir, antihypertensives.
